The United Kingdom is in lockdown, meaning that most people are required to stay at home save for some limited exceptions such as shopping for essentials, getting exercise and seeking medical attention. There are slight differences in Wales, Scotland and England, but the broad brush strokes are the same. As with the last lockdown, many people will be feeling uneasy or anxious at developments. But our experiences from the past can inform how we deal resiliently with the current situation. If you feel that your mental and emotional wellbeing is suffering from lockdown blues – especially now that it coincides with January’s traditionally cold and dark outlook – then do not suffer in silence. Pick up the phone and call the Samaritans on 116 123. Or, there is the national LGBT Switchboard on 0300 330 0630. Charities and voluntary organisations will be continuing throughout the lockdown offering their care and support, although services may be being delivered online for a while. Community radio stations and LGBTQ media will be here as well, so why not turn off the rolling news channels and join us for some different entertainment. Above all, remember that as a community we have been through much worse, and our experiences can help all of society get through the coronavirus situation. Stay safe and stay well.
