As expected by many commentators, the government's consultation response on Reforms to the Gender Recognition Act has stopped short of allowing transgender people to self indentify. The announcement came on Tuesday afternoon from Women and Equalities Minister Liz Truss that in order for someone to officially have their gender identity changed, a medical and psychologist report is required and an application to a panel made. Ms Truss said self-ID was "not the top priority for transgender people", but did please some commentators instead announced plans to move the gender recognition process online and the cut the personal cost from £140 to a "nominal fee". This improvement will have an impact on many trans people on lower incomes and has already irked political reactionaries. Nancy Kelley, Stonewall's Chief Executive said: "Today, the UK Government has fallen far short on its promise to reform the Gender Recognition Act, and has missed a key opportunity to progress LGBT equality. “
