It has for years been the contention of gay and trans activists that people with homophobic and transphobic opinions are dangerously unstable, with explosive tempers and utter disrespect for people or property. Well, last week this seemed to be borne out in the town or Lurgan in Northern Ireland, where cash machines were destroyed and vandalised – all for displaying a rainbow emblem. Santander is an international bank and has an established LGBT group. To support its employees and customers during Pride season, it added a rainbow to the screens of its cash points. Bigots went berserk in Lurgan, depriving hundreds of people of ATM services by wrecking the bank's cash machines and scrawling antigay abuse all over public property. Speaking to the newswire Pink News, a Santadner spokesperson said “We are appalled by this act of homophobic vandalism and have reported the incident to the police”.
