It was not widely reported in the UK, but the left wing fortnightly paper The Socialist, formerly known as Militant, says that a school strike and demonstrations, whose demands include an end to classroom sexism and homophobia, linked up young people, veteran campaigners and a whole host of progressive feminist, LGBT and equalities organisations. An estimated one and a half million students emptied secondary schools across the regions of Galicia, Asturias, the Basque Country, Catalonia, Valencia, Andalucia, Madrid, Extremadura, the Canary Islands, and Murcia. Sixty regional demonstrations were held on the same day as the strike, with upwards of fifteen thousand people marching in Madrid. The actions were co-ordinated by Sindicato de Estudiantes and Libres y Combativas.
