International news channel Al Jazeera reports that there has been a positive result for pro-EU and pro-liberal parties in the Moldovan Presidential Election. The pro-Russian authoritarian incumbent was defeated by a liberal female challenger, Maia Sandu. The BBC News Channel noted that there were spontaneous parties in the streets as her victory with fifty seven per cent of the vote, became apparent, and that her election is a major embarrassment for the Kremlin, where dictatorial homophobe Vladimir Putin had openly backed the sitting president. However, Euronews TV reported that Ms Sandu will still have her work cut out out in a country where corruption is endemic and where Parliament can block Presidential legislation.
