Praise for Finnish Law Reform Proposals

23/12/2022

Brazil based radio station, Radio LGBT-Mix says that the Finnish government is poised to change the rules on gender recognition for trans adults. Self identification as trans is up for debate in the Finnish Parliament, with the proposal from ministers that the current legal requirements for a trans person to be rendered sterile and have a mental health diagnosis be removed. There has been some disappointment among lobby groups that the proposed change will impact only the over eightieens, with trans youth still left in limbo, even though an European Union survey finding that seventy one per cent of trans people know their gender identity before adulthood. On a positive note, trans parents may have their gender identity recognized on their children's birth certificate. This avoids unnecessary outings and safety risks for the family.
