LGBT Newswires including our friends at Pink News have been among those reporting that European Union sanctions against those towns and municipalities in Poland which had been busy declaring themselves to be “LGBT Free Zones” seem to finally be paying off, as the first such region had voted to de-list itself as such an anti-gay region. Nowa Dęba in the South East of the country declared itself to be an “LGBT Free Zone” last year, and appeared to stick resolutely to its course of action, even when a town in the much more liberal Republic of Ireland decided to cease being its twin town. However, now that EU funding has been taken away, councillors in Nowa Dęba quickly changed tack, voting ten to one to de-list from the “LGBT Free Zone” movement. Damian Diektiarenko, the head of the Nowa Dęba council said that the initial reactions to the declaration to “have been misunderstood”. Fifty countries around the world have been urging the right wing government in Poland to stop their persecution of sexual and gender minorities, which has been behind the “LGBT Free Zone” initiatives.
