Hungary’s right wing government continues to oppress millions and build more and more authoritarian power for itself, something which has put it on a collision course with the European Union, whose subsidies that same government gladly consumes. The EU has said that its patience for the macho man state, which is built around the cult of Victor Orban, its de facto leader, has run thin, and several court cases are now being pursued against Hungary. One of them directly refers to LGBTQIA civil rights, which are curtailed in the country. The EU is also concerned at the independence of the country’s media, after opposition and liberal TV and radio stations were taken off the air. One such station was Budapest’s KlubRadio. The closure of this broadcaster has been referred to the European Court of Justice based in Luxembourg. Other concerns, not yet referred to any legal body, are that the legal system within Hungary has been twisted to the will of the ruling Party and that democracy is being dismantled.
