That Summer of 1996: Spice Girls Mark 25 Yrs

20/07/2021

It's now been a quarter century since the Spice Girls debut single, “Wannabe” smashed to the top of the charts, and changed not only pop music, but the way in which many young women saw themselves. Of course, it was inevitable that the Spice Girls would become huge LGBTQ icons, and their singles a standard on gay club playlists the length and breadth of the nation. The Girls smashed numerous music industry records, including being the only group besides the Beatles to have the coveted Christmas number one single in three consecutive years. On Sunday night, the Heart Radio station invited Emma Bunton to travel back twenty five years to that eventful summer of 1996, to reminisce about the astonishing success of the best girl band ever, and icons of queer girl power.
