k.d Lang has spoken to the Big Issue, the weekly street sold news magazine, about her life and career. She reveals that she came out to her mum in 1977. As a Christian in small town protestant town, k.d's mum struggled with the news that her daughter was lesbian for a while, but found gay affirmative people of faith and today is the singer's best friend at the grand age of 96. k.d. Says that the “d” in her name stands for dichotomy, and tells readers that she cringes when she is spoken of as a “country and western” singer. She definitely does not agree with the conservative and reactionary types of politics which are frequently observed to be a part of the wider Country and Western movement.
