The Jewish Chronicle notes this week that it's been forty years exactly since the tragic death of Marc Bolan, the elfin young singer who along with David Bowie, helped define the glam sound of the early nineteen seventies. Bolan was heterosexual, but that didn't stop him from becoming an icon for gender nonconformity across the board, with his wispy persona, make up and liberal appliances of glitter. Although it is sometimes fashionable these days to mock the glam rock craze, it did have a profound effect on men and women alike during a period of intense social change. Marc Bolan's band T-Rex dominated the charts between 1970 and 1975, and even after his hit making career was over, Bolan championed new and exciting music. He invited punk rockers on to his ITV programme Marc. He was killed in a car crash in South London. To commemorate the anniversary, the JC has video linked to his greatest hits and an intriguing interview with gay chat show host Russell Harty. Visit our website for a link to it.
