National gay radio station Gaydio reports that, four years after the death of gay singer and all round philanthropist George Michael, the classic Christmas single he wrote, namely Wham!'s “Last Christmas”, has topped the charts. With over nine million downloads in Christmas week, the festive feel good single set a new record, for the longest time taken to reach number one – in this case thirty six years. Wham! Originally released the track in 1984, but it was held off the top slot by a single that George Michael and bandmate Andrew Ridgely also took part in - Band Aid's famine relief charity single “Do They Know It's Christmas”. George Michael passed away in 2006, but after his death, the full extent of his kindness became known. He gave away vast sums of money to charity and did much voluntary work himself, for example, cooking at local homeless hostels in disguise so no one would recognise him. He deserves the accolade, a gay hero.
