Hip-Hop music has been a dominant force in pop for the last thirty years. Nurtured in the UK by people such as Tim Westwood on LWR and Kiss FM pirate radio in the eighties and then the BBC, the genre has taken great strides in the years since the coming of age of the internet, to represent diverse voices within it. Women and LGBTQ people have pushed back against traditional misogyny and homophobia and now communicate directly with their audiences, building new online safe spaces. Veteran gay magazine Gay Times has teamed up with DJ and performer Ellie Prohan to launch a new monthly playlist to be available through Apple Music. Called Engayged, the playlist will in their words “spotlight, celebrate and support LGBTQ+ artists and our allies in hip-hop.”. Gay Times reports that Ellie “is a DJ, broadcaster and promoter whose passion and knowledge for hip-hop has taken her across the globe. From playing festivals and parties in multiple continents, her flair for fierce DJ sets has seen her make a name for herself in an often male-dominated scene”. So, if you are a fan of the wonderful world of the hip hop genre, get a definitively LGBTQ fix with Ellie once a month. Join via the Gay Times website at gaytimes.co.uk.
