20 Years of LGBTQIA Artists on BBC 6 Music

01/01/2023

Congratulations are in order to the national UK radio network BBC Radio 6-Music, which came on the air in March 2002, but has only just been broadcasting a series of programmes to mark its twentieth anniversary. The station, which made use of new digital radio technology to become the first new national BBC network since Radio 5 in 1990, is known for its programmes of what might be broadly termed “alternative music”. It carries programmes for indie, punk, reggae, ska, goth, heavy metal and various sub genres within these fields. Although not having any obvious LGBT+ remit, the station has always championed alternative queer bands such as Rriot Grrl group “The Gossip”. Quaker, bisexual activist and singer Tom Robinson, who made the track “Glad to be Gay” famous in 1977, is also a long standing presenter with BBC Radio 6-Music.
