Barry Duke, writing in the atheist journal The Freethinker, is pleased to report that the Australian state of Victoria has become the latest territory to prohibit evangelical Christian efforts to turn gay and trans children into loyal heterosexuals and gender conformists. A gay humanist website, The Pink Triangle Trust, explains that The Change or Suppression (Conversion) Practices Prohibition Bill carries a penalty of 10 years’ jail or fines up to ten thousand dollars. The legislative reform comes after a report found that up to ten per cent of LGBTQ Australians had had run ins with advocates of compulsory conversion practices. The article noted that the bar on the quack conversion practices was broadly welcomed by a majority of people who do not believe that gay and trans people can or should be reprogrammed. Back at the Freethinker, Mr Duke lays down a challenge for those groups that claim to turn gay people into what they describe as “ex-gays”. “I’ve frequently stumped these loons by asking whether they would extend the same “care” to heterosexuals wanting to turn gay. I’ve yet to be given a satisfactory reply”!
