Trans Boy Takes Legal Action over Access

29/11/2020

The BBC's LGBT correspondent Ben Hunte reports that a transgender boy, known as Reece, has commenced legal proceedings against NHS England who are making him and other adolenscent trans people wait lengthy periods to access gender clinics for children and adolescents. NHS England says that a review is underway and defended itself by saying that there had been a significant increase in young people being referred for gender services over the last five years, amounting to a rise of around five hundred per cent. The BBC was criticised in some quarters for giving airtime in their story to a group calling itself the “LGB Alliance”, which is a group of largely white gay men and lesbians who dislike trans people. They have links to more extreme organisations known to have backing from religious and cultural conservatives.
