It’s been a successful year for opposite sex Civil Partnerships in the West Country, as Bristol City authorities release the number of partnerships formed in the city – a total of 128 in 2021 and 283 since a change in the law allowed opposite sex pairings to register for a Civil Partnership. Campaigners noted that many heterosexual couples these days joined with gay activists and feminists as wanting to have an alternative to traditional marriage, which they believe is steeped in misogyny, property ownership and Bronze Age superstitions. Martin Loat, of the Equal Civil Partnerships campaign group, said: "Nearly 6,000 couples formed a mixed-sex civil partnership in 2021. That's a lot of people – and families – who are now in a secure relationship, legally and financially, who obviously wanted an alternative to marriage.”
