A crew of eight students have made a hard hitting drama called A Right Charlie, following the plight of a young man who thinks that religious fundamentalist “deliverance therapy” can change his sexual orientation from gay to straight. B247 newspaper reports that the students were inspired by a commitment from across the political spectrum to formally end the practice, which is believed to have been going on in shadowy corners of religious conservatism, for decades. “I personally was shocked and horrified to find out that the practice of conversion therapy was still legal in the UK,” said producer Ruby Oakwood, who is studying filmmaking. The students, who are based at UWE, say that they would like to contribute to the discussion about how best to protect LGBTQ young people from these sorts of psuedo-psychological interventions.
