“America on the Brink” is a new book by Luke Mogelson, a journalist who has covered many failed countries over the years and now returns to the US to document the unfolding problems with extremist Republicans in his homeland. The book earns a review in the “Guardian” newspaper with Julian Borger remarking “he charts the evolution of a strange soup of extreme right factions including the Proud Boys, the Three Percenters, the Oath Keepers and the Boogaloo Bois.” Mogelson also assesses whether the US will descend into sivil war, noting that the far right wing have no real enemy, because their precious white men are not really facing any threat. He concludes “if it comes to pass, it would be uniquely bizarre, “a war fuelled not by injury but by delusion”. The problem for Trump and his supporters is that “because the only real thing about their war is their own belligerence, their own fear, they can never win”. Instead, he writes, “they can only rage endlessly against elusive phantoms”.
