With all the discussion on pronouns and how to refer to people who identify as non binary or intersex or genderfluid, sometimes people feel that they are being left behind by new terminologies and phrasings. This doesn’t just apply to terms within the LGBTQ population either. The disability campaigning charity Scope has published a list of dos and don’ts for people interacting with disabled folks, aimed at avoiding embarrassing misuse of language and avoiding causing offence. Among the terms that should be avoided in modern discourse are “Able Bodied”, and “The disabled”. Instead, “non-disabled” and “disabled people” should be used in their stead. Visit scope.org.uk for more information and a video presentation on better communication between disabled and non-disabled people.
