Meanwhile, tributes have also been paid to gay journalist and writer Richard Smith, who is reported by Gay Times to have passed away recently. Smith wrote for the magazine during a period of intense and exciting political activity in the LGBT communities, with direct action groups such as OutRage!, the Lesbian Avengers and Homocult challenging the landscape of legal inequality. Meanwhile, gay pop had come of age, with boybands openly marketed to us and militant punk acts like Pansy Division and Bikini Kill being radically queer and feminist. Richard Smith covered these cultural changes in the pages of the gay press and in 1995 put down his many thoughts on popular music in the book Seduced and Abandoned, which you can still find in second hand gay booksales. Perhaps Smith's greatest moment however, was in producing a documentary for BBC Radio 1 about ecstasy and dance music culture. After broadcast, the station felt that the programme was not sufficiently anti-drugs and vowed not to work with Smith again.
