Tom Allen, whose latest television q uiz show has seen him come in from the comedy underground to entertainment mainstream, is a likeable gay man and fierce defender of the right to be camp. Recently, he was interviewed by the “Sixty Seconds” page of daily free paper The Metro. In it, Allen reflects on his own childhood during the dark days of Section 28. He says of Pride events “I love it. I always wanted to feel I belonged to a community”. Mr Allen also notes that LGBTQ children are in some ways the most oppressed as they oftentimes don't have a role model within the family. On July 8th he publishes a book, “No Shame”. It's his memoirs of growing up an outside in the nineties and many of his recollections will chime with other LGBTQ people. If you're interested in buying it, why not support a local, independent or better still queer bookstore and give some cash into the community.
