Local Author Writes Book on Pioneer Gay Men

15/12/2020

Bristol 247 reports that local Bristol based author Darryl W Bullock, whose kind support a decade ago when writing for Venue Magazine helped persuade community radio leaders that an LGBTQ programme was needed, has a new book out next year – something that will perhaps be a stocking filler for the gay or music enthusiast in your life at Christmas 2021. Darryl's past exploration of pop culture and LGBTQ life led to the acclaimed “David Bowie Made Me Gay”, a survey through a century of gay music. Now, he's focussed on the tumultuous nineteen sixties and how a network of gay men helped shape the music of the generation that changed politics and society for good. ““These people helped shape the sound of the sixties and helped to change attitudes towards LGBT+ people at a time when the Government was refusing to legislate in our favour,” says Darryl. The book, called The Velvet Mafia looks as people such as Brian Epstein and Joe Meek amongst other names that defined the sounds of the sixties. The book will be released on February 4th 2021 to coincide with LGBT History Month. Why not order your copy from a gay or gay friendly bookstore like Gay's The Word in London https://www.gaystheword.co.uk/ or News from Nowhere in Liverpool - https://www.newsfromnowhere.org.uk/
