23/11/2021

Kate Million Ross, writing in indie newspaper B247 reports that with alarming levels of hate crime being published this summer, many people within minorities communites are seeking self defence classes to protect themselves and give them extra confidence as they go about t heir business. On Saturday of last week, the first experimental martial arts training session aimed at LGBTQIA people and their allies was held at Totterdown Methodist Church, led by Millie Morfitt, who founded an LGBTQIA fitness group, and Nicki Higgins, a sensei with fourth dan black belt credentials. Participants learned grabs and holds to enable them to escape from a would be aggressor. Attendees then proceeded to share ideas and solidarity over a dinner at a local Italian restaurant. We understand that further events may be in the pipeline and will be announced on LGBTQIA twitter feeds.
