On Saturday of last week, the first experimental martial arts training session aimed at LGBTQIA people and their allies was held at Totterdown Methodist Church, led by Millie Morfitt, who founded an LGBTQIA fitness group, and Nicki Higgins, a sensei with fourth dan black belt credentials. Participants learned grabs and holds to enable them to escape from a would be aggressor. Attendees then proceeded to share ideas and solidarity over a dinner at a local Italian restaurant.
