Barnardo's, which has been working with disadvantaged children and young people since 1866, has broadly welcomed the news that the government is to provide emergency funding to the tune of £6.5 million to support adoption agencies and adoptive families during the coronavirus period of disruption. As former Prime Minister Tony Blair once noted, LGBTQ people make excellent adopters and their child focussed support helps society deal with the problem of straight families who abandon their children. The government announcement of the coronavirus support was announced to coincide with National Adoption Week. Javed Khan for the Barnardo's Charity said “In the longer term we need a step change in support for children who cannot live with their birth families. This includes further support for children and their adoptive parents, support for relatives providing care, and better matching systems to ensure all children find the right family as soon as possible.”
