Punk Rock LGBTQ Friendly Records OnLine

04/09/2020

We all have a little punk in us.  The DIY Spirit of the punk revolution led to a huge increase in independent record labels and reinvigorated both the underground press and the free radio movements, out of which independent LGBTQ media such as this programme ultimately developed.  A common piece of graffiti you may have seen sprayed around underpasses or on buildings in urban areas is “Punks Not Dead”, and indeed, forty five years after the punk rock scene first caused a moral panic amongst government and the establishment, the movement is still definitely alive, with lots of independent labels, do it yourself fanzines and magazines, badge makers, clothing fixers, and DIY Podcasts.  Bristol has always had a strong punk movement with bands who were political, interesting and dedicated to their roots.  The city boasts a specialist punk and post punk record shop, called Specialist Subject Records.  This is situated in the vibrant gay heart of the city, above the vegetarian café called the Exchange and where the old gay club, later techno venue called Castro’s used to be.  Specialist Subject say that whilst their physical shop remains closed due to Covid19, they are very much open for business online.  At their website you will find new releases, recent and second hand vinyl, tape and CD, plus merchandise for bands, badges, stickers and a wide range of music and political fanzines.  Pop along to their website for an international service which will ship anywhere in the world.  Needless to say, there are many LGBTQ bands in the punk scene, taking advantage of the movement’s strong rebellious instinct and commitment to self control for artists and designers.  https://shop.specialistsubjectrecords.co.uk/
