You may recall that we reported recently on the Hidden Corner Bookshop and Cafe, a local queer and black run resource space which was Bristol's only source of dedicated LGBTQIA books. The proprietors of Hidden Corner have been locked out of the building by landlords and protests have been held because many local people feel that the lock out was illegal. Now, the owner of the previous cafe to occupy the site, has added his support to the operators of Hidden Corner. Josh Bowker ran Milk Teeth Fairtrade Coffee Bar on the site between 2017 and 2020, when he was forced to close due to the pandemic. Mr Bowker corroborated claims by the Hidden Corner owners Sophia and Aaron that the landlord is unreasonable. Mr Bowker told B247 newspaper: “ my mental health suffered through having Milk Teeth, principally because of the landlords, not really to do with anything else. It was generally a good time but the landlords made my life pretty bad.” A detailed article on the situation and how you can help the Hidden Corner has appeared on the website of investigative newspaper The Canary, founded by lesbian activist Kerry Ann Mendoza. The Canary piece is linked to on our newsfeed.
