A gaggle of fundamentalist Christians who believe that they have been converted from gay to straight by divine intervention have failed in their stated intentions to gather hundreds of people to rally in Washington DC at the weekend.
The "Freedom Rally" was put together by a coalition of "pray away the gay groups", putting forward the unscientific view that homosexuality and transgenderism can be magically altered by converting to fundamentalist Christianity. Their critics point out that no evidence has ever been presented of this process in action. All reputable mental health groups in the US agree that there is no evidence that sexual orientation or gender identity can be programmed in this way, and any apparent changes are the result of a dangerous repression of their true feelings. Many people who profess to have changed soon return to a gay identity.
The "Freedom Rally" was a unmitigated distaster, with just over thirty people attending to hear right wing pundits and preachers.
