Police in Yorkshire are asking the LGBT communities and others with any intelligence on extremist anti-gay religious or political groups to come forward as they attempt to catch a group of self defined "Local Men" who attacked a rainbow flag which was actually flying outside a police station in the town of Bridlington. The anti-gay group then bombarded local media and the Police with hate mail full of strange, inaccurate and fanciful claims about homosexual men (they seem to have overlooked other groups under the rainbow spectrum). Pink News, the BBC and other media say that the Police station has no immediate plans to fly a replacement rainbow flag, as the Pride weekend is over in Yorkshire. This has been greeted with some dismay by LGBT internet commentators who point out that this will give the false impression that the anti-gay extremists have won. However, the authorities are seeking those responsible and have requested intelligence on who might be behind the attack.
In 1999, the now defunct and much missed LGBT newspaper The Pink Paper reported that hate material from the neo-Nazi group International Third Position, who pursue a Strasserist ideology, had appeared in this area of Yorkshire advocating violence against sexual minorities.
