A new radio station has started on the national DAB digital radio platform here in the UK. It will gain many listeners as it intends to play all female artists. Jack Female Radio takes over the frequency previously occupied by the “chill out” network Jack-Three and goes live this week. However, listeners will need a newer DAB PLUS receiver to hear the new station. It will feature female artists from the last five decades of music, and will largely be programmed on an automated computer format – perfect for listening at work during the working day, for example. Bristol has some history in the long story of women on radio. In 1992, during International Women's Week, a short lived station called FEM FM transmitted from the St Andrews district. The station used what is called an RSL License, that is, permission for a short term pop up service. It used a frequency of 101 FM, which had previously been occupied by some of Bristol's many pirate stations, and these days, is used by the Severnside transmitter of queer friendly dance music broadcaster KISS-FM.
