Sky news reports that Welsh political watchers are digesting the recent election of gay man Adam Price to replace Leanne Wood as the leader of Plaid Cymru. For our overseas listeners, Plaid is a Welsh Nationalist Party established in 1925 and actually predates its sister the Scottish Nationalists. Although it started as a cultural right wing movement, since the sixties Plaid has repositioned itself as a kind of eco-socialist party, advocating devolved government within a federated Europe, organics, local Welsh language culture and individual self empowerment. Plaid is also a friend to community media, backing locally produced Welsh language newspapers, and in the sixties and seventies took direct action in the shape of pirate broadcasting to force the BBC to transmit in the Welsh tongue. Under Adam Price, many people believe that the party will move further to the left. Mr Price already has a distinguished career at Westminster as an MP and today he sits in the Welsh Assembly at Cardiff Bay. During the controversy over the Iraq War, Mr Price became a champion of the Anti-War Movement, and began unsuccessful impeachment proceedings against Prime Minister Tony Blair. He also worked with Conscience, a broad coalition of pacifist Christians, anarchists and communists who advocate allowing conscientious objectors the right to redirect their taxes to non-military projects.
