The current affairs magazine The Atlantic, which has in the past published articles by figures such as the gay conservative columnist Andrew Sullivan, dedicates its November issue to what is sees as a crisis of democracy across the Western World. In a series of essays by distinguished analysts, the intellectually respected publication explores how conspiracy theories on both left and right, along with the rise of information technology, have undermined democratic institutions. At the same time, there may be historical trends that tend to take most societies in an authoritarian direction over long periods of time. For example, the Roman Republic became an effective dictatorship after several hundred years. For minorities such as LGBT people, the preservation of democratic freedoms is very important, as history also shows that dictatorships have an almost universal heterosexual supremacist ideology and that they are incompatible with gay and trans freedom.
