LGBT Politics Natural Allies of Right - OpEd

25/02/2019

Richard Hendron, a former parliamentary candidate for the UK Independence Party, has written for the newswire Gay Star News to argue that many LGBT people are now coming out as being on the political right. Mr Hendron argues that the political left has paid lipservice to gay and trans freedom but that it is on the libertarian right wing that LGBT people truly belong. Leftist gays and feminists have just tended to shout the loudest, but there are many LGBT folk who vote for right wing parties, in his analysis. Mr Hendron's article has prompted something of a storm of comments for the Gay Star News website, with LGBT people of left and right arguing the case. Perhaps however, as one commentator remarked, the truth is that gay and trans people belong to neither political left or right and are as likely as anyone else to have their views formed by a wide variety of issues and circumstances and not just their sexuality.
