A self-proclaimed “futurist” has told a conference that there is no future in radio. But no one is particularly listening to him. Paul Lavalle writes for the magazine “Wired”, which has an unfortunate reputation for getting the future wrong. According to audio industry newswire RCS, Lavalle made his comments at a symposium on which way the industry was going. However, industry insiders have kept his remarks at arms length. Our own Terry noted “reports of radio’s death have been mooted before. When TV grew exponentially during the early sixties, many futurologists predicted its imminent demise. Then, right on cue, radio reinvented itself for a pop music era, with the advent of the pirate stations and later Radio1. In the eighties the same prediction was made – just when acid house and rave music came about and gave another new impetus to the medium. With podcasting, streaming online stations and the merger of You Tube with radio content, the future looks much rosier than we are being told!”.
