The Irish Post newspaper this week shines a light on the hiterhto twilight world of female abuse of young boys as allegations of sexual abuse begin to affect many institutions. Edward Hayes, now 74, describes in a full page article for the paper, which is a community paper for the Irish in Britain, that when he was 12, he was sent to an Catholic Church run home for youngsters neglected by their parents. There he was intimidated by a nun who repeatedly forced him to have intercourse with her over a period of three years. Eventually, the nun became pregnant and was sent by the church elders to Ireland, where he believes she gave birth to a child he never knew.
Mr Hayes described to the Post how his life had been blighted by alcoholism and failed relationships because of the torment the abuse caused him. He is now involved in a group which investgates and seeks closure on past Catholic Church abuse cases. Mr Hayes believes that his story may be the "tip of the iceberg" and that there could be hundreds of cases of female abuse of young boys. However, it is also noteworthy that some 1970s style feminists have not made investigating this issue any easier, by claiming that female violence rarely happens. This position was reiterated by Anna Fisher last weekend writing in the communist newspaper the Morning Star.
