Have you heard of vogueing? Made famous and mainstream by Madonna's outrageously queer friendly 1990 smash hit single, the phenomenon had been simmering away in the less fashionable parts of gay and trans New York for some years and had already featured in a documentary called “Paris is Burning”, released in 1989. For African-American LGBT people, the community offered by the Vogueing scene was an important antidote to both racism and homophobia. The vibrancy and legacy of this important period in our shared history is portrayed in a new drama screening on BBC-2 on Thursday evenings from March 21st. Called “Pose”, the programme has already earned a smashing write up in the Radio Times, probably the most respected television and radio listings magazine. The series launches on Thursday night at 9.30pm.
