United States Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia died in his sleep last weekend. Scalia, a conservative and who served 30 years in the High Court was seen by the majority of the American LGBT community as both hateful and improper when it came to his commentary and rulings over same-sex equality. He was one of four of the nine Supreme Court Justices who recently voted against same sex marriage in the US describing the move in his dissent as a “ threat to American democracy” and also wrote, “ The substance of today’s decree is not of immense personal importance to me, But what really astounds is the hubris reflected in today’s judicial Putsch.”
The timing of Scalia’s death means that President Obama now has the unexpected opportunity to nominate a moderate liberal as Scalia’s replacement before his departure, subject to predicted rumination, protest and procrastination by the Republican party.
