The local community newspaper for East Bristol, The Week In, reports that South Gloucestershire Council has become the first local authority in the West Country to be accredited by the White Ribbon Campaign, an initiative that aims to reduce domestic violence and abuse within the setting of the family. It has long been the contention of feminists and many sections of the LGBTQ communities that domestic violence occurs mostly within the nuclear family unit and that the main threat to the wellbeing of women and children occurs in this context. The White Ribbon Initiative is however, inclusive, in that it aims to mobilise heterosexual men to oppose violence in the family. Supporters of the White Ribbon campaign include the gay singer Will Young.
