A Bill has been proposed to the Scottish Parliament to outlaw the smacking of children in the country. John Finnie, a Green MSP, said that it was high time that children were afforded the same protections from assault as adults. The Bill has wide cross party support from MSPs representing the Labour, Liberal Democrat, Conservative and Scottish Socialist Parties as well as crucial backing from the government which is held by the Scottish Nationalist Party. Sky News reported that some of the few people defending the hitting of minors were religious groups, particularly those on the evangelical right wing of the faith spectrum. LGBT and atheist bloggers were quick to point this out, and one commentator quipped that it stood to reason that Biblical fundamentalists would defend cruelty to children.
