Heat Radio held a Spice Girl weekend over the Whitsun Bank Holiday weekend, bringing much needed relief from the mass of reportage on the European Elections on many other channels. The network, which broadcasts pop music and celebrity gossip on Freeview and online, is run by the same team that publish the celeb watching magazine Heat. The Spice Girl weekend saw an outing for both album and single releases from the legendary British girl group, who became feminist icons during the nineteen nineties with their dynamic and inspirational take on “girl power”. They annoyed many separatist feminists with their embrace of celebrating sex and sexuality, and also irritated the radical left wing by stating that Mrs Thatcher had been the first Spice Girl – a tongue in cheek remark that nevertheless prompted a full page rebuttal in the leftist newspaper Socialist Worker in 1996. The Spice Girls were in turn embraced by the gay press and radio shows of the day, with Boyz magazine being a particular fan of their work. Back at Heat Radio, the airing for Spice Girls classics also saw competitions to win tickets for the band's reunion tour which is going on at the present time. If you are interested in pop music and culture, then you might like to know that Heat Radio transmits on Freeview channel 716.
