Euro Letter Deplores Eurovision Boycott Camp

28/05/2019

Eurovision is coming on Saturday, 18th May.  Coverage will be going out on BBC 1 Television and in super digital stereo on BBC Radio Two, where the acerbic notes of Ken Bruce will be guiding us through proceedings.  On the television, gay radio presenter Scott Mills will be handling the coverage, live from Tel Aviv.  Several gay celebrities have become engaged in the increasingly bitter political and military situation between Israel and Palestine.  Stephen Fry and Simon Callow have both signed an open letter, reports the Jewish Chronicle a community newspaper which takes a pro-Israel political stance.  Fry, Callow and others criticise efforts by some campaigners to organise a boycott of the contest.  They say “this unifying event… is crucial to help bridge our cultural divides and bring people of all backgrounds together.  Unfortunately, this year, the spirit of togetherness is under attack by those calling to boycott Eurovision 2019 because it is being held in Israel, subverting the spirit of the contest and turning it from a tool of unity into a weapon of division,” the letter says.
