Countdown Mathematician Fights Back

13/12/2018

The Jewish Chronicle, which the UK’s longest established Jewish paper, and one of the earliest examples of community media in the UK, having been set up in 1841, reports that Rachel Riley has been subject to anti-women and anti-Jewish abuse on Twitter.  The popular mathematics expert on Channel Four’s legendary gameshow Countdown, is a supporter of LGBT rights, but rarely gets involved in political discussions.  She has however, relayed a message from the football charity Kick It Out highlighting racism and anti-semitism in the beautiful game.  Sadly, this attracted the attention of the usual internet trolls.  We should point out however, that there is a lively anti-racist and pro-gay tradition in football as well, and that many clubs now have strong policies against abuse.  In addition, the Gay Football Supporters Network provides a national network for LGBT fans of football.
