Simon Amstell has written for the street sold magazine The Big Issue in its regular feature “Letter to My Younger Self”. This year, Mr Amstell turns forty, and his article addresses how he gradually came to a place of confidence about being gay. Amstell experienced anxiety about having to hid who he really was throughout his teenager years and reveals he event went to Paris on his own at eighteen to meet a guy and have a snog. Today, Amstell has this advice to himself and to young gay people growing up. “Don't worry about getting a boyfriend, the relationship will take care of itself.... stop arguing with your body. If you are hungry, eat. If you are tired, sleep. And if you want to have sex with that boy and he consents, then please do”. The Big Issue is well respected for its journalism and its championing of progressive causes. It is sold by people affected by homelessness and costs two pounds fifty each week, with new editions published each Monday.
