Voguing is Revived - BBC Radio 4 Programme

16/07/2019

“Voguing” is back in fashion, some thirty years after the heyday of the African-America, latino and most definitely LGBT scene that was first brought to popular attention in the 1987 documentary “Paris is Burning” and the subsequent track by gay icon Madonna, which became an unlikely dance music and pop chart cross over during the pleasant summer of 1990. That is the finding of the BBC Radio Four programme “The Art of Now”, which went out on Monday night on the national talk and current affairs network. Voguing however, may never have gone away. So said the underground culture journal Crack, based in Bristol. Whatever your opinion, it it true that Voguing and the network of ballroom parties that sustains it, is a vibrant and important part of black gay and queer culture, and deserves to be celebrated.
