"Transphobia" in Local Mag Raises Issues

26/07/2018

The Bristolian, a formerly left wing anarchist newsletter known for its scabrous humour and ad hominem attacks on local politicians, both Labour and Conservative, did have a widespread audience amongst the gay and trans communities during its period edited by Ian Bone. In 2005, it memorably described Conservative councillor Richard Eddy as a "homophobic weirdo”. However, its detractors claim that since those days, it has drifted into strange political territory, with a free use of homophobic slurs and aligning with conspiracy theorists. In its latest electronic posts, the newsletter attacks Mayor Marvin Rees for allegedly closing down the Labour Party's Women's Group on Facebook because of transphobic posts. The newsletter wants to defend the right of Labour activists to what it calls “discuss the Gender Recognition Act”.
